Our local schools are making diligent strides
to help foster healthy self-esteem levels amongst students as well.
In talking with an elementary school principal and a junior
high school counselor, I’ve learned more about what behaviors they
see and what corrective actions they’re taking to help our kids.
CONCERNING BEHAVIORS EXHIBITED BY STUDENTS WITH LOW
SELF-ESTEEM:
- Poor attendance / truancy
- School avoidance
- Lack of study skills / initiative
- Poor interaction with peers
- Withdrawal
- Inappropriate behavior (aggressive, defiant, bullying)
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
- Help make a students experience at school enjoyable
and rewarding
- Support students and listen to their concerns
- Remind students what they’re roles /
responsibilities are as students as well
- Offer rewards / incentives for various things
- Maintain consistency in enforcing policies/ procedures
- Find balance between support and strictness
- Encourage students to “get involved” in school activities
- Classroom discussions about self-esteem and personal development
- Character building posters hung through the school
- Daily self-esteem message on the “Morning News” (over loud speaker)
